Task 1 – Proposal

1. Review: Produce a written review of your personal skillset, identifying your strengths, skills, chosen format and SMART targets for improvement that you hope to meet during the production of your film. Use screenshots from previous products to support points made

Personal Skillset: Identifying my strengths and skills

Strengths

The strengths that I have in my personal skillset are: written communication and problem solving.

An example of how my written communication is one of my strengths, was when during the production of my last project I communicated with my actors and extras on social media, I told them what time we were filming and what they needed to do. Below, is a screenshot that shows my written communication skills.

Skills

The skills that I have in my personal skillset are: working in all technical areas of filmmaking and research/pre-production.

An example of working in all technical areas of filmmaking is my editing for my last project. I created a match cut which is a cut that is used in filmmaking. A screen shot below show’s the edit I created.

My chosen format

For my moving image product I have chosen to do a short film. It will be a sci-fi and the sub genre will be drama. It will be set in the 22nd century in the year 2100. It will feature only two characters, human (male) and a cyborg (female). The length of my product will be ten minutes but will be shorted to a suitable edit length for the final screening.

SMART targets that will be used during the production of my film

SMART Target 1 – Camera shots

S – My goal is to improve the camera shots for my fmp and make it the most important technical part of my film.

M – When I experiment with different shots I will request feedback from my lecturer.

A – I will use my free time to use camera equipment (dolly and tracks) and experiment with different shots.

R – This target is relevant as during my last project my audience feedback stated that I needed to experiment with more camera shots and I stated in my evaluation that I would improve upon this for my next project.

T – I want this goal to be achieved by the end of the production for my short film.

SMART Target 2 – Stronger Dialogue

S – My goal is to improve the dialogue for my FMP’s screenplay.

A – I will create a draft version of my screenplay. This will make me understand the draft of my dialogue and improve as I refine my screenplay.

M – I will share the draft version of my screenplay with my lecturer for feedback.

R – This goal is relevant as during my last project my audience stated that some of the dialogue felt unnecessary which shows I need to think very carefully when writing dialogue.

T – I want to achieve this goal before the presentation of my pre-production on Friday 26th March 2018.

2. Project Concept: A description of your idea, outline content, style and narrative. Use concept artwork, photography and/or screenshots of influences to support.

Description of my idea

The idea for my short film is a sci-fi about a male human vs a female cyborg.

I will use the following sci-fi products as my influence: Blade Runner (created by Ridley Scott), Ex – Machina (directed by Alex Garland), Humans (created by Sam Vincent and Johnathan Brackley) and Artificial Intelligence (directed by Steven Spielberg).

The outline of my content

The main genre for my short film will be sci-fi and the sub genre will be drama.

Style

For the production of my film I will not be using any VFX as it will be hard to use this in my short film as it only spans across two months. I will instead use cinematography, makeup, sound design and editing.

Narrative

The plot for my short film has not been decided at the moment. However, I have created a mind map of potential plots that I will share with a focus group and seek their feedback. This will help me when I am conducting my primary research and decide the plot for my short film.

For the setting of my short film it will be set in the 22nd century and the year it will take place is in 2100.

Concept art work and photography of what I want my film to look like

Costume Design

3. Evaluation Methods: Outline how you intend to evaluate and assess your progress throughout the pre – production and production stages.

How do I intend to evaluate and assess my progress though the pre – production stage?

There are three key tasks as part of the pre-production during my independent study. Which are: research, analysis and pre-production. I will evaluate and assess my progress by:

  • Completing and submitting the tasks above to timescales
  • Reflecting on feedback from lecturers and peers to further refine my work
  • Reviewing my work to make sure its meets the brief

How do I intend to evaluate and assess my progress through the production stage?

I intend to evaluate myself and assess my progress by using a reflective diary for the production stage. I will evaluate my progress by reflecting how professional I was during the production and assess myself by looking at how successful I was during the production of my short film. And, I will set up targets to improve myself during the production.

To evidence what I have done during the production I use: video clips, photos and audio clips which will show what I have done.

4. Research proposal: A description of how you intend to research your idea and the research techniques you will use.

How do I intend to research my idea?

I will research my idea by using a range of primary and secondary research sources (qualitative and quantitative). Below is a document I used to help me choose my research techniques.

research methods

What research techniques will I use?

For my primary research I will use the following qualitative and quantitative research techniques: focus group and interview. My chosen research techniques will allow me to understand sci-fi more, who it appeals to and to further develop my idea.

For my secondary research I will use the qualitative research techniques: books, internet research, and existing tv, film and radio content. I will look at a range of different sources for my chosen research techniques so it can help me to further develop my idea.
