Secondary Research

First research secondary method (internet research)

Below you will find internet research for one of my potential show ideas which is based around technology.

Old research

Barb website link

To start with,Barb is a broadcast research audience board that shows national TV ratings for the UK. It helps breakdown the viewing of programmes that are broadcasted thought the week and on the weekend. This website has helped me understand audiences and TV ratings for my fmp. One of the main ideas for my TV and radio show is a technology program. An influence for my TV show is the ‘Gadget show ‘ and this TV show broadcasts on channel 4 once a week and repeats on its other channels.

Barb channel 4 ratings screenshot

The screenshot shows that TV ratings for channel 4 and its other channels are very high when a programme broadcasts. Other ratings show that repeated programs are very low when shown at another point during day. These statics show audiences watch programs when they are first broadcasted and TV ratings are lower if a show is repeated. Moreover, this shows that audiences will prefer to watch a favourite program of there’s when it is first broadcasted instead of watching it later.

Guardian gadget show news article

This article by the guardian on the Gadget show, says the audience demographic prefer the show’s older hosts as they were informative about technology products and explained them in a very clear way. However, the new series shows that the audience feel like the new hosts are to comedic and fun. Furthermore, the audience demographic prefer the show to have the hosts act in a way that are similar to the old hosts.

This research shows that to make a technology show that appeals to older and younger audiences, the show must be shown at a time when everyone can watch it. For example, a technology show should be broadcasted in the afternoon as a lot of TV ratings are usually high at that point of the day.

A technology show must also be informative because the audience must be informed about a product and understand its pros and cons. Making a technology show fun and comedic doesn’t suit a technology show because then it would make the show be less informative about technology products.

New Research

BBC culture film article

BBC culture is a website that publishes articles about arts and entertainment. The article I found shows statics and data about film critic’s favourite film product so far of the 21st century. This also shows figures of the film industry’s workforce and if the diversity of female and male workers has changed too.

The article also shows how the film industry has changed over the time. Film Critics also show what their favourite film is and statics show which film director has the votes for one of their products.

Another point to discuss is, the gender of critics who voted in this poll. 31% of the critics were female and the rest were male. This is important because it shows how the voting differs between male and female critics.

This article is important because it shows how the film industry has changed. For example the changes in: workforce, films and festivals. Another important part of this article is that it shows what can be done to improve the film industry even further.

For example: diversity of female working in film, how film products can be improved for a directors next product and showing how the film industry will grow in the next century.

Guardian article about Film box office

Film box office guardian article

The guardian is an online article website that publishes news articles about current media stories. This article talks about how films have performed at the box office from March 31st to April 2nd.

Websites like the guardian publish box office articles weekly because it is important to know how much money the box office is receiving and what films are the most popular at the moment.

The article says the strongest film performing at the box office is beauty and the beast. The headline is called the winner. The film has generated at least £51.4 m on its third week despite the release of some big films such as the smurfs and baby boss that are expected to surpass this film because of its promotion and the target audience the product is aimed at.

Other headlines are ‘Disappointment one and two’ these headlines show that films such as Ghost in the shell and Free fire although they have created excitement for its target audience, these films have not generated enough money to be in top ten box office films.

Another headline is called ‘ the wipeout’ this headline discusses that Shia LaBeouf’s newest film called  ‘Man down’ only made £7 m at the box office and how the film could of been promoted even more. The film opened at one venue on Friday and released on digital platforms. This is an important headline because it show’s how more films are being released on digital platforms and how this can affect the cinema industry.

The headlines are important in this article because it shows which film appeals to cinema audiences at the moment. The use of the word’s winner and disappointment suggest which film will continue to perform well at the box office and what other films might not do well at the box office but may have the potential to make more money if its promoted even more.

Second research secondary method (Existing content)

Below you will find my research of existing content that will help me with my idea that I have decided to do for my pitch.

Influence for TV (film 94)

Film 94 is a British TV film show, that talks about upcoming Hollywood films and does reviews on films that have recently come out. The show still continues and has a rotating presenter format.

It began its first ever broadcast in 1971. Barry Norman presented the show since 1972 before he left in 1998. Since then, the show has had a rotating presenter format, some of the presenters that have hosted the show are: Jonathon Ross, Claudia Winkleman and Paul Merton.

Influence for Radio (The film program)

The film program is a radio show that broadcasts on BBC radio four.  The content of the show talks about upcoming releases, actors, directors and the latest about what is currently happening in the film industry.

The show is presented by Francine Stock. It is broadcasted weekly and is on every Thursday. There is also a podcast of the show as well.

Influence for Radio (Kermode and Mayo’s film review)

Kermode and Mayo’s film review is a film podcast that airs on BBC radio five. The show airs weekly and is on every Friday.

The content of the show, reviews films and invites guests to come and talk about their upcoming film. The two radio presenters have interviewed huge stars and directors such as: Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Ben Wheatly, Denzel Washington and Hugh Jackman.

The show plays old film music from the 70s, 80s and 90s. In addition, the show plays music songs by old artists too. The show does not play any music from A to C list.

Mark Kermode, is a British film critic that gives his own views about cinema. He is  one of the most respected film critics in the UK. He also owns his own blog too called ‘Kermode Uncut’ and he posts reviews not just about films but posts about his opinion on novels. For example, he posted a podcast of an interview with a novelist and critic called Kim Newman. The podcast can be listened to below.

Third secondary  research (Films and dvd’s)

Below, you will find my analysis of a film or DVD I have watched and how it will help me with my pitch.

Analysis of BBC’s film 94 program

Link to film 94 episode

The episode I watched of film 94, shows Barry Norman interviewing an acclaimed film director called Robert Altman about the release of film called ‘short cuts. This episode of film 94 was broadcasted on 28th February 1994.

They have chosen Barry Norman as the presenter for this show because he is a well-respected film critic and has a good understanding of film products. He also has a lot of knowledge about the film industry too.

In addition, he has a good informative style that informs his target audience about film products and when he interviews famous stars or directors he breaks down as much information as possible so the audience can understand the product and the reasons why they have made the product.

The title opening sequence looks appealing to the show’s target audience because its shows a few mini screens of iconic films that have released to critical acclaim so far in the 1990’s. One of these films is Home alone. Showing short clips of films in the title sequence make the show look more interesting and appealing to the audience.

A lot of dark and dim lights are used in title sequence and it looks similar to lighting effects Hollywood use. They have chosen to use these lighting effects because it shows that this program also reviews about Hollywood films  and this can appeal to audiences who are into Hollywood films.

The music has a lot of light piano and jazz music because this show could also be aimed at an older target audience too. Moreover, the music sounds nostalgic too making the older audience think the golden age of Hollywood still continues into 1990’s and this show will provide the audience with the memories of the golden age.

The set design looks simple because it will be a formal interview and this show is aimed at a mature audience. They have to gone for any fun or wacky design because this will look less appealing to the target audience and the design for the show will look like it will fit into the entertainment category.

When Barry Norman is interviewing Robert Altman he asks as many questions as possible because he wants to get as much information as about the product and break the information down for the audience so they can understand  in more detail. They also feature film clips from the product so it makes the show more visual because if it does not feature any visual technical aspects it would make the show boring.

Analysis of Mark and Kermode’s film review

Kermode and Mayo’s film review show

This podcast I listened too, is of Simon and Mark interviewing Ben Wheatley about his latest film called ‘Free Fire’. They also do a countdown of the top 10 biggest box offices films of the week and review the latest films.

They have decided to do a podcast because their target audience can go back and play information they have missed in the show, they will be able to understand more about the show’s content and . Furthermore, the target audience will be able to understand more about the latest reviews of film products and what film products are big at the box office at the moment.

They have chosen Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo as the presenters for this podcast because Mark Kermode is a very well-respected film critic and he has a lot of knowledge about the film industry and his informative style makes the target audience understand more about current film products and his review on the latest films.

Simon Mayo is a radio presenter that has worked on BBC radio one’s biggest show (The radio one breakfast show). In addition, he has won some prestigious radio broadcasting awards from The radio academy awards and the broadcasting guild awards.

The podcast does not play any songs or music because the aim of a podcast is to talk about a topic or interview a person about product. The target audience may find it odd for music or songs to be playing in the background as it will not suit the podcast’s content.

When Simon and Mark are reviewing a film they always talk about what they thought was the products strong points and its weak points. They also discuss how the weak points can be used as improvements for another product. They use this discussion style because it will make their target audience understand about the product more and this is also a good way of promoting a film product to its target audience and expanding it even more.

The interview with Ben Wheatley is an important part of the show as it a chance for the creator of a product to have a in depth discussion with the presenter about their product and ask as many questions too.

The presenter has an opportunity break down information to their target audience about their product to. For example, Mark asked Ben Wheatley why he made this film, Ben Wheatley then explained the inspiration and origin story for his product. This is an important part for the target audience because they will be able to understand more about the product and it also promotes the product to more target audiences.
