Below you can watch my short film that I have created.

I have also created an extended cut that includes features that were edited out from the original.

Evaluation

Reflection of your film

To begin with, I am really happy with the outcome of my short film. I felt as if my organisation improved a lot in this project. I completed all my research before I came back and completed all my pre – production despite me falling a week behind due to being sick.

For the production of my short film I felt as if my directing skills improved as I guided the actors/crew on the set and made sure they knew what they were doing.

For the post production of my film, I felt as if I improved my editing skills to. For example, when Samuel opened the door and he arrived in Bruce’s office I didn’t realise I created a match cut. This shows I am becoming more aware of editing techniques and how I can make the techniques into my own unique style.

When it came to the screening of short film my audience laughed a lot at the humour and they seemed to really of enjoyed it. For feedback, it was very positive and there were comments on how I can improve for my next project.

Overall, I really enjoyed this project as I felt like improved a lot in my organisation and production skills.

How effective was my research?

Yes, I felt as if my research was effective because I understood how my product  would appeal to my target audience and see how my secondary research would further develop my idea.

For my primary research, I did a focus group to see how comedy would appeal to people. I showed my focus group 4 different clips from a variety of different comedies and asked them if they liked the clip I showed them. This focus group showed me how subjective comedy is and how people react to comedy.

For my secondary research, I looked at different types of comedies and wrote how it could influence my short film’s story. This research showed me what influence I thought was the strongest and how I could put it into my short film.

How successful is my short film? (Planning + Production)

I believe my short film was successful in terms of my planning and the production because I made sure I had all my pre – production with me during the production of my film and made sure my actors + crew knew what they were doing.

For my planning, I had all my pre – production with me during the production. An example of this, is when I had my shot list and my camera operators understood what shots I wanted. Another example is my production schedule, I created a schedule for my actors/crew so they what day/time we were filming and what week it commenced. In addition, despite last minute changes I managed to figure out how to reschedule a filming date on social media and reminded my actors/crew so they knew.

For my production, the actors and crew clearly understood what they were doing on set. An example of this is when, my main actor Dylan asked what he should do in terms of his performance as he said his next line. I demonstrated this to him and guided him very carefully. Another example, is when my camera operator Kieron asked me what shot I wanted next. I showed him the shot list of what shot I wanted Following this I recommended to him to do a quick practice shot, he then understood what to do as we filmed the next scene.

Strengths + Weaknesses

Strengths

I believe the biggest strength for my production was my directing and organisation skills. An example of this, is when I shot the last scene for my short film. I got my extras costumes for them and explained what they needed to do. Following this I showed my actor what he had to in terms of his performance and guided my camera operator when we were shooting our final scene.

Another example of another strength was my editing. An example of this, is when the main character ‘Samuel’ prepared to leave for work. I created a quick montage of him putting on his jacket and bag, which made the story flow more in terms of my technical production.

Weaknesses

I believe a weakness for this project was the location planning. I was originally going to film in a McDonald’s restaurant. However, when I emailed the franchise employee he took it to the national communications department and said I wasn’t allowed to film in any other restaurants. Therefore, I needed to rearrange this location to my college’s canteen. This shows I need to think carefully of where I want to film and talk to the staff in advance.

Another challenge was the rescheduling. My actors also had to do their own and other projects. To improve upon this for the future I need to have a meeting with my actors/crew at the beginning which will allow us to discuss planning in advance.

How did I maintain professional practice?

I maintained professional practice by having my most important pre – production with me at all times during the production and I made sure I shared my documents with the actors and crew.

I also reminded calm and assertive during some of the challenges I faced in this project.

Audience feedback

Overall, I received a range of feedback which consisted of the following themes.

  1. Overall the feedback was positive
  2. Some improvements need to made with dialogue and experimentation with camera shots.
  3. I had attempted something new that no other student had done before.

How will this help my FMP?

To summarise, I will reflect on the constructive feedback to improve my work for my FMP. I will also take some of the learning and ideas from peers by watching their productions.
