Introduction
Welcome back to my review of the Pokemon Sun and Moon anime!
This time we will be reviewing episode 117! (Shaymin, Meltan and Sandy Lost Explorers!) As always, I will summarise the story, give my views on this weeks episode and what I look forward to seeing next week! With that out the way! Lets get on with the review!
Story Summary
Beginning
Ash and the gang arrive at Malie city (located on Ula’ula island) so they can explore the city! The location they first start at is Malie Garden! However, trouble quickly arises as Sandy (Lana’s Eevee) gets excited to explore the city and almost gets hurt by a car until Shaymin saves Sandy! After Lana gives a scolding to Sandy they eventually meet a Ana’aki Chikuwa (his ninja appearance and style of talking referencing the Naruto franchise) who will be there tour guide for the trip around Malie City.
After meeting Nurse Joy (who wears an awesome kimono!), the gang dress up in kimono themed after their Pokemon (Ash wearing a Rowlet Kimono and Kiawe wearing an Alolan Marowak Kimono). During their exploration of Malie City, team rocket as always see Ash and his friends. So, they create a plan to steal their Pokemon.Partically, Shaymin since it is a mythical pokemon and its rare to see one in Alola.
Later, a powerful wind causes Mallow’s flower headband to fly away and Shaymin chases after it a long with Sandy/Meltan so they can help her out. Mallow and everyone else begin to panick after the trio go disspear once the wind settles down. Ash sends out his Lycanroc (Dusk form) and each of them go around Malie Garden to find the trio. Nurse Joy also sends out a message out to look out for the trio!
Middle
Shaymin tries climbing a barrel to get Mallow’s flower headband which has landed on a roof. Sandy and Meltan eventually arrive to help Shaymin get it off the roof! Once their teamwork saves the day, team rocket arrive to trap them in a metal cage. However, their trap quickly backfires as Meltan eats the metal and escapes a long with the other two.
Jessie and James send out Mimikyu and Marieane to get them back! Unfortunately Sandy and Meltan are outmatched but Mallow arrives in time (Shaymin managing to grab her attention) to ask Team rocket what they want with their Pokemon as always. After a badass attack on Jessie by Lyacaroc! Ash arrives with Lana and they continue to battle!
However, their battle gets interrupted by Stufful who arrives with her mum (Bewear) to blast off team rocket by using a Bewear themed kite! They blast off with Bewear running with the kite a long with itself flying off the ground due to the powerful wind! Yes! Seriously!
End
Ash, Mallow and Lana reunite with their Pokemon a long with the rest of the gang showing up too! After, treating themselves to takyoaki (a popular japanese food) they return to see Nurse Joy and Ana’aki happy to see them reunited with their Pokemon.
The episode ends with the Ana’aki promising to show the gang a Pokemon gym in Malie city partially Ash getting excited about this and wanting to challenge the leader of the gym!
A post credit scene shows Mallow admiring her night time Kimono with Shaymin as well as thinking about what outfit she would like to wear the following day. Lana says she should wear a ninja outfit but it reveals she was only joking with Mallow falling for her joke.
My Thoughts!
Story
This episode’s plot was a lot like past series filler so I thought it was decent all around. However there some highlights. Meltan/Sandy show a lot of battling potential when they were fighting team rocket’s Pokemon even when they had a difficult start! I look forward to seeing more of these battles when it progresses to the Alola league which is not too far away! I hope to see Ash and Lana train with their Pokemon whether that be onscreen or offscreen to show us what their Pokemon are capable of achieving when battling!
In addition, it was nice to see learn more about the culture of Malie City too! The Eeeve’s wearing their evolution kimono was great sight too! The way team rocket blasted off this time made me laugh as what surprised me was how Bewear was able to fly a long with the powerful wind because according to its pokedex entry it weighs a 135kg!/297.6lbs!? To me, this just another example of bizarre Pokemon logic being broken in the anime!? Oh well! the blast off for this episode was still hilarious!
Animation
The Pokemon battle against team rocket was well paced and detailed! Partically, when each Pokemon was showing off their moves (such as Meltan’s flash canon and Sandy’s double edge) ! The transition from Bewear to its kite appearance was cool too!
Final Thoughts!
Although Pokemon filler episodes sometimes feel unnecessary its still nice for the series to have a break from the main storyline once in a while. Besides, there is a lot more exciting stuff coming up as the series continues!

Ana’aki takes Ash and the gang to the dragon type gym of Malie City! Ryuki ( a character in the Pokemon Sun and Moon Games) finally makes his debut! Ash will be using his Meltan to challenge Ryuki’s Zwelious and Drudiggon!
I am looking forward to next weeks episode as Ryuki finally makes his debut! And It will be Ash’s first time using a steel type Pokemon in a gym battle since having one in Kalos .
